Electrostatic Powder Coating Filters

Electrostatic paint filters are tools or systems used by specialists to obtain coatings of excellent quality. The bright color that characterizes furniture, cars and all metal or sheet metal elements is achieved thanks to the use of these filters. The perfect combination to obtain the best finish is the use of a spray gun and a filter, especially since in these areas it is possible to remove all the particles that damage the finishes and make them look less aesthetic. The fact is that powder coating filter cabinets contain a series of components that play a very important role in eliminating particles.

What is a Powder Coating Filter?

Powder coating cages are generally used by various industrial sectors such as automotive, furniture and supply industry. The booths emit powder coating and hold what can be reused. The retention is done by the filtration system installed in the machine. Today, the most widely used system among these equipment is cartridge filters.

Although they are more expensive than bag filters, cartridge filtration systems are more cost- effective for companies in the long run. In addition to helping the industry reduce the release of pollutants into the atmosphere as it prevents almost 100% of particles from being released into the environment, it provides more safety for the machine operator and prevents paint waste as it reuses the material.

What is the Purpose of Powder Coating Filter?

Filters serve many purposes. Once the application starts, the guns transfer the paint from the powder can to the parts. For a good result, 30% of the applied paint is recovered and 70% remains on the parts. This 30% is absorbed by the filter, where it passes through the cyclone and separates the fines (cyclone efficiency of 95%), while the paint with larger particles is returned to the cage area and the fines are separated.

The filter is a specially designed system to prevent the passage of dust and other particles into the booth. This means that the element to be painted is free of all these contaminants, resulting in a smooth and glossy surface. Sometimes painters delay the replacement of filters to save costs, resulting in faulty repairs that force repeated operations.

A good filter system starts with the correct balancing of the suction flow. Paint cages create an airflow that moves through the entire booth. This flux will sweep and capture any paint not applied to the part, commonly known as overspray. To ensure a correct capture, the flow must be homogeneous throughout the entire booth. When the flow is not uniform, air vortices are created.

These vortices will cause the paint to float in certain areas. To stabilize paint booths is to have a system that distributes the suction through a filter wall or water curtain. Different booths have
different systems. Whatever the method of equalization, it needs to be adjusted to ensure that the air velocity inside the booth is similar, i.e. using the filter system.

What are the Types of Powder Coating Filters?

To prevent particulate ingress, the cabinets are equipped with different filters, each with specific functions that ensure optimum performance of the installation. Filter types differ according to their structure and intended use. While there are filters such as polyester, nanofiber and cellulose, the products are also divided into different types according to their intended use. The filters used by the
cabins are as follows:

  • Air intake prefilter
  • Ceiling filters
  • Paint retention filters

What are the Differences of Powder Coating Filters?

Powder coating filters are generally divided into groups such as polyester filter, cellulose filter and nanofiber filter. Each has a different purpose and effect. Polyester filters are more durable and smoother than cellulose and do not require external screen support to maintain the strength and resistance of the pleats. They require 50% to 70% less filtering surface than cellulose filters for a given volume of air, allowing for greater pleat spacing and full utilization of the cartridge's filtering area. The nanofiber filter has a flexible and fine structure. It is ideal for any powder coating application that requires fine workmanship. These filters are semi-permeable and very affordable. Another popular filter system is cartridge filters. These are also widely preferred because they are easier to use, safe and environmentally friendly.
